Dog rescued from basement after flames destroy Port Washington home

PORT WASHINGTON, Long Island (WABC) -- A house on Long Island was lost in a fire, but a hero police officer found and saved a dog.

The flames tore through a home on White Oak Drive in Port Washington just before 8 p.m. Friday, while the owners were not at home.

First responders forced their way into the house, where they discovered the dog named DJ in the basement. He was unharmed.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
