POINT LOOKOUT, Nassau County (WABC) -- Officials at a Long Island beach are on high alert after lifeguards spotted a 9-foot shark in the water.

Point Lookout and neighboring Hempstead beaches have been red flagged for swimming on Thursday following the sighting.

Shark Patrol has been deployed to the scene, using drones and jet skis to inspect the waters.

A lifeguard originally spotted the shark from the main chair at Point Lookout, the most crowded area of the beach. Other lifeguards and patrons confirmed the sighting.

Additionally, there were intermittent beach closures at Rockaway Beach in Queens due to multiple shark sightings.
