ROCKY POINT, Long Island (WABC) -- People on Long Island are hoping not to see a repeat after Thursday night's storms, which caused damage, including fires, and knocked out power for thousands of people.

The winds toppled trees in several towns, and on Friday, schools in Central Islip and Amityville are being dismissed early due to the heat.

A tree is still on top of a car in Rocky Point, and the homeowner told Eyewitness News that she doesn't know what the damage will cost her at this point.

On the North Shore in Suffolk County, many communities sustained damage, including in Rocky Point, where the fire department responded to 17 alarms in just over an hour Thursday night, and six other departments aided in the response.

There are still trees and wires down. On Long Island, there were 1,108 power outages from the storms.

Over in New York City, there were 2,780 power outages because of the storms and heat.

The weather causing a lot of issues for people.

Lori Herbert lives on Ridge Road in Rocky Point and was grateful that she listened to the warnings and stayed indoors as a tree on her property came crashing down onto her car in the driveway.

"I got the text that there was going to be a storm stay away from the windows, and I heard a couple of bolts of lightning and a loud crash and here we are, my car is shot," Hebert said.

Herbert said some volunteers from her church are coming to cut the tree up and then her car will be towed. She's one of many people cleaning up from the mess these storms caused Thursday night.
