Long Island teen arrested after middle schoolers became sick from cannabis gummies

MASTIC BEACH, New York (WABC) -- A Long Island teen was arrested this week for allegedly selling cannabis gummies to a middle school student earlier this year.

That student then gave them to at least three other students who became sick.

It happened back in May at William Paca Middle School in Shirley.

The students ate the gummies on school grounds and were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Suffolk Police say all four were sickened then transported to a local hospital after ingesting the gummies on school grounds.

On Tuesday, police announced they arrested 18-year-old Jahsheem Jones at his home in Mastic Beach.

He was charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

Jones was issued a desk appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

Last March at the William Floyd Middle School in the same district, a similar incident took place triggering two other arrests.

Parents in the school district say it's a frightening wakeup call.

"It's a disgrace, it's scary, you never know if you're gonna get that phone call that your kid just OD'd in the school," said William Floyd district parent Michelle Cantore.

Lucas Hernandez and his mom are now using the case as a springboard to have the difficult conversations, some of which she says have already taken place inside the school.

"He talked a lot about his health class here actually not to take any alcohol or drugs, all the bad effects of that," said Katherine Hernandez.

A spokesman for the William Floyd School District released the following statement:

"We are grateful to the Suffolk County Police Department for their efforts in bringing this individual to justice. This unfortunate situation was addressed with the three students and their families when it occurred last May. We continue to educate our students throughout the school year, through topical lessons and special events, about the dangers of all drug use including cannabis and edible cannabis."
