It unfolded as police responded to a call for a stolen air conditioner in an apartment building on 335 East 148th Street.
Police say just before 6 p.m. an officer shot the original 911 caller - who failed to drop the knife despite repeated orders from officers for him to do so.
Officers went to the second floor to look for the caller, but could not find him. On the way back down the stairs, a 32-year-old man came running up the stairs with a butcher knife in his hand.
The officers' body cameras apparently show they tried to get the man to stop - both verbally and with hand gestures. It is not clear if there was a language barrier. When the victim called 911, he spoke in Spanish and a translator was needed.
After the call, and before help arrived, it is believed the man grabbed a knife and went outside to confront the thief in the courtyard. Then, while heading back to his apartment, he crossed paths with police.
Officers then performed life-saving measures on the man. He was taken to Lincoln Hospital by EMS and is currently in stable condition.
Responding officers were also taken to an area hospital for evaluation.
Authorities say the surveillance video from the building shows there was another man in the courtyard who may have been trying to steal the air conditioner. Given the shooting and the confusion that followed, the thief escaped.
The 911 caller is now listed in stable condition.
