The deadly shooting happened just after 9 a.m. near East 86th Street and Coventry Road in Canarsie.
According to the NYPD, six officers responded to the scene after a 27-year-old woman reported a man harassing her at her door. The woman told 911 dispatchers that the man was known to her, and that she was actively seeking an order of protection against him.
Upon arrival, officers observed a 28-year-old man who matched the suspect's description leaving the building. As officers approached him, however, the suspect fled.
Police pursued the suspect southbound on East 86th Street and eventually encountered the suspect, who had a firearm in his hand, on Coventry Road. Officers ordered the man numerous times to drop his weapon, but he did no so, resulting in police shooting him.
"After repeated warnings were given to drop his weapon, the subject did not comply with those orders and the subject was shot once in his chest," said Assistant Chief Frank Giordano, commanding officer of the Patrol Borough Brooklyn South, during a Sunday afternoon press conference.
First responders attempted to perform CPR before transporting him by a patrol car to Kings County Hospital, where he later died.
Officials say the events of the shooting were captured on body-worn cameras.
Police recovered a loaded revolver at the scene following the shooting.
"They were talking to him, 'stay with me, stay with me' -- his fingers were moving. It's not until he was having a seizure that they started panicking," he said.
The responding officers were all taken to area hospitals for evaluation.
Authorities are investigating the relationship between the woman and the suspect, but say there have been several prior domestic-related incident reports between the two.
