This week in Neighborhood Eats is a dish you can add to your Thanksgiving menu.
And one of the secrets to a great holiday meal is to make a mix of complex and simple recipes.
This recipe is simple and it's on the Thanksgiving Menu at Tipsy Parson.
Tipsy Parson is located at 156 Ninth Avenue in Chelsea.
"Tipsy Parson is an old southern dessert. It was made for church socials so it was sort of leftover ingredients that you had in your pantry from the weekend," said Julie Wallach, the owner of Tipsy Parson.
It's sort of like a spiked trifle and yes, it's served at Tipsy Parson. The menu here is about comfort.
"We try to use a lot of really classic southern flavors but present it with a twist," said Ty-Lor Boring, the executive chef at Tipsy Parson.
So there are fried pickles, pulled pork sandwiches, mac n' cheese, and biscuits, but also biscuit bombs.
"We grind our own sausage by hand, combine it with New York State sharp cheddar, wrap that inside a biscuit and bake it up and pour cheese right on top," Boring said.
Chef Ty-Lor Boring is also serving a Thanksgiving meal that includes chestnut soup.
It's super easy to make; celery, leeks, onions and chestnuts are all sauted, almond milk is added, you can opt for broth, cream or water, it all simmers and then it's into the blender.
Tyler tops it with chestnut oil for a double chestnut taste.
One woman had it last year at Tipsy Parson's Thanksgiving.
"They brought it out it shot glasses and we were like, do you take a shot of it or use a spoon, but it was really good," she said.
The owner, Julie Wallach, opened Tipsy Parson four years ago in Chelsea, a neighborhood she loves, and the customers keep coming.
"Everyone's drawn to comfort food, its kind a sweet spot for people, they remember it from childhood and we sort of want to evoke all of those feelings and flavors of being at home but in the big city," Wallach said.
It has homemade jams, southern food, and a homey feel.
"I love the food, I think they combine a tremendous amount of flavors to make really unique dishes," a customer said.
