Texts are going around stating people owe money for electronic tolls, parking tickets, and speeding violations.
The texts warn if they don't show up, they could be required to go to court in Newark.
Local police departments are issuing warnings on their social media pages.
"The way to approach it is the same way people should approach every scam, to be very skeptical of an unsolicited information or response or request you get over the internet," said Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens.
If you've received a text or email that appears to come from law enforcement, the best thing you can do is contact police immediately.
