New study shows energy bills have increased 13% nationally; NY homeowners feel the pain

VALHALLA, New York (WABC) -- A new report is shedding light on rising utility costs, finding that energy bills have increased by 13% nationwide.

Ryan Carlon, a homeowner in Westchester County, offered a blunt assessment of what he pays for electricity and natural gas.

"Middle of the wintertime I'm paying over a thousand dollars a month in the winter for my Con Ed bill," he said. "Moved here from New Jersey and I was never paying more than a few hundred dollars."

A report released on Thursday by Climate Power, a climate advocacy organization, shows energy prices have risen 13% nationwide since January.

Recently retired Susan Blair tries to blunt the impact of seasonal spikes by averaging out her bill to a fixed amount each month.

"Even from our level billing, it went up $100," Blair said. "So, now if it's going to go up even more it's really tough on us."

According to the report, the price of natural gas is set to spike. Experts say that's because much of the country's electric grid is fueled by natural gas, which sells for two to four times as much overseas.

"When manufacturers or suppliers would prefer to export it because they get a lot more money for it overseas... that's one challenge," said Parag Amin, a business analyst.

The other is increased demand from AI data centers, which require vast amounts of electricity. That's in addition to the Trump administration ending tax credits for solar, wind and other renewables.

"Which is really what can be built in the next few years to meet that growing demand. All of these things are coming together to create this affordability crisis," said Robbie Orvis of Energy Innovation.

New Yorkers were able to notch a small victory by speaking out. Experts say that New York has bucked the trend of these requested rate increases by utilities.

Con Edison had been proposing a double-digit rate increase. That has been scaled back to a pending of about 3%.
