NYC, NJ ferry services disrupted by ice on Hudson River

Wednesday, January 28, 2026
WEEHAWKEN, New Jersey (WABC) -- Ice is thickening and spreading on the Hudson River -- disrupting boat traffic, including key ferries.

Ice is accumulating on the Hudson River due to sustained temperatures below 30 degrees and weak tides, currently aided by a half moon.

The larger the boat, the easier to get through icy patches -- so the Staten Island Ferry is operating as usual, thanks to the size of their vessels.

Service changes are in effect for several other lines, including the complete suspension of NYC Ferry boats across all routes.

"Operating in heavy ice conditions requires slow speeds and little to no notice regarding landing service suspensions. NYC Ferry crew will continue to monitor evolving waterway conditions and prepare the fleet to ensure service can resume once conditions improve. We will provide ongoing updates regarding resumption of service as soon as it is safely possible to do so," a statement from the NYC Ferry said.

New York Waterway ferry services have been suspended from Edgewater, which is why the ferry service is now busing people from Edgewater to the Port Imperial ferry terminal in Weehawken.

The Liberty Landing City Ferry has suspended service for the remainder of the week through Friday.

Due to ice, The Circle Line has canceled all cruises through Feb. 8.

Officials warn that ferry services may be impacted the next several days amid extreme cold.

Here's a breakdown of service changes:

  • NYC Ferry has been suspended.

  • NY Waterway has been suspended from Edgewater. Passengers can take a bus to the Port Imperial terminal.

  • The Staten Island Ferry is operating on a normal schedule.

  • Seastreak Ferry is experiencing delays on Wednesday

  • The Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry has been replaced by a bus since Jan. 20.

  • Liberty Landing Ferry has suspended service through Friday

  • Circle Line has canceled all cruises from Jan. 29 through Feb. 8.

Commuters are urged to check schedules and the latest service announcements before heading out.
