CENTRAL PARK (WABC) -- Have you ever heard of lawn bowling?

A new season rolls into Central Park on Friday.

It was a favorite pastime of Walt Disney himself.

A clubhouse that's the home base for the New York Lawn Bowling Club is celebrating its 100th anniversary ahead of its opening day in Central Park.

The club is the focus of Alejandro Delgado's documentary "Low & Slow, A Brief History of the NYLBC."

There are roughly 100 members.

"No one cares what you do, how much money you have, your race, gender, anything," member John Goss said.

They spent a lot of time setting the record straight.

They do not call this bocci, and it's bowls, not balls.

It's a game that's played all over the world, and things can get intense.

The game has roots in England and was first played in Manhattan in 1733. In 1926, George Reid founded the New York club.

"Literally the grass was moved from Bowling Green at the tip of Manhattan up to Central Park," Goss said.

This club is heading into its centennial season and will host tournaments in June, including the Regional Hall of Fame Triples.

"Central Park is already an oasis. The lawn bowl green is an oasis within that oasis," Goss said.

They say new members are always welcome.
