Thursday, November 20, 2025
NEW JERSEY (WABC) -- New Jersey Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill will resign from Congress effective Thursday, November 20 at 11:59 p.m.

Her resignation comes several weeks ahead of her January inauguration, as Governor Phil Murphy begins the process of selecting her replacement and scheduling primary elections.

Sherrill currently represents the 11th Congressional district and serves on both the House Armed Services Committee and the House Select Committee on Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party.

Gov. Murphy is expected to issue a writ of special election for her NJ-11 seat on Friday. He cannot do so until Sherrill's resignation takes effect.

Once issued, the writ will lead to a primary election between January 30 and February 5, followed by a special election between April 4 and April 16.
