NJ Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill suggests 'reverse congestion pricing' for FIFA World Cup

NEW YORK (WABC) -- New Jersey and New York City will both welcome new leaders next month, but some issues from the outgoing governor and mayor are already resurfacing.

New Jersey Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill suggested New Yorkers could face a congestion toll when crossing over for the World Cup.

The idea drew a response from New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.

The soccer fans flipping pizzas at Gino's on Kissena Boulevard can't wait for the World Cup, but they're dreading anything that makes it even more expensive.

"Not a good thing. Already the prices of tickets are very high. And now you've got to pay extra to go see the game, plus everything extra with it?" Anthonly Molinari of Gino's of Kissena said.

The FIFA World Cup is coming to MetLife Stadium this summer with thousands of fans expected to make the trip across the river from New York City.

New Jersey's governor-elect is suggesting that those fans could be slapped with a congestion pricing toll-in reverse.

Not unlike the tolls New Jersey drivers pay when entering Manhattan south of 60th Street.

"Possibly people coming into our state from New York will be paying congestion fee tolls so they can enjoy the games," Sherrill said.

The tolls have infuriated New Jersey drivers, but legal challenges have been unsuccessful.

During the campaign, Zohran Mamdani said he would push to make FIFA's tickets more available and more affordable for New Yorkers.

As mayor-elect, he's set to become the city's most prominent soccer fan.

"Well, if I went to the World Cup, I'd be using public transit. This is one thing that I look forward to speaking with her about, because as much as we are in separate states, as much as we speak of separate cities, we also know that this is an area where so many of our lives are intertwined," Mamdani said.

How serious is the governor-elect? She hasn't said.

But it is expected that she would be met with serious opposition.
