Officers responding to a call about a blue USPS mailbox left open on Lemoine Avenue on Sunday morning noticed mail was missing and decided to check other locations.
They found a similar scene at 309 Main Street, 1213 Anderson Avenue, 1475 Bergen Boulevard, 231 Main Street and Abbot Boulevard near Columbia Avenue.
At this point, authorities would not say how the suspects broke into the boxes, but Eyewitness News did see a postal worker changing the lock on another box in the city.
This crime is causing concern in the normally safe area.
"That's terrible, because this town is very safe, it's quiet, nice people," said resident Susan Zamudio.
Postal patrons are being alerted and residents are being asked to report anything out of the ordinary.
"It is very important to protect our safety, and our accounts and stuff," said resident Cristine Sica.
Detectives are also asking Fort Lee residents if they used any of the impacted mailboxes after 3 p.m. Saturday to monitor their bank accounts if any their mail contained financial information.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have been victimized to contact their banks, credit card agencies and financial institutions.
If any fraud or theft is noticed, residents are also asked to contact the Fort Lee Police Department to file a police report.
"If you do get a phone call from an institution that you mailed something to, or if you are monitoring your banking and you realize a check or a transaction hasn't occurred yet, please notify us," said Fort Lee Deputy Police Chief Edward Young.
