Pine Beach police officer charged with DWI after accidentally shooting friend

LACEY TOWNSHIP (WABC) -- An investigation is underway after a police officer accidentally fired his gun early Friday, shooting his friend in the leg.

The incident happened shortly before 6 a.m. in Lacey Township, where police responded to a report of an accidental shooting at a 7-Eleven on Main Street.

There, they found a 23-year-old man from Forked River with a gunshot wound to the leg.

The victim was immediately taken to Jersey Shore Hospital in Neptune, where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

According to the prosecutor's office, 23-year-old Jesse Urban, a Pine Beach police officer, called 911 call to report that a friend was injured when his gun was accidentally fired.



It is unclear how the gun was fired, but police found evidence of alcohol involvement.

Urban has been charged with driving under the influence and was suspended without pay pending the results of the investigation.
