New Jersey police seize aggressive dogs involved in attacks in Hoboken and Secaucus

HOBOKEN, New Jersey (WABC) -- A court hearing will decide the fate of a group of dogs after the three animals attacked other dogs being walked in Hoboken days after they attacked two people in Secaucus.

The attack happened Wednesday near a Shop Rite parking lot and left one of the animals bloodied and the two dog walkers with sprained wrists.

Authorities had already intended to seize the three aggressive animals for a separate attack earlier in the week in Secaucus.

Police have since seized the dogs involved in the attack and the owner surrendered three other dogs to Jersey City Animal Control.

Cellphone video captured the chaos that sent the 2.5-year-old mini Bernedoodle named Frank to a nearby veterinarian for emergency surgery.

"Frank was the dog that was mauled by the Cane Corso," owner Abby Swiatkowski said. "They found two deep puncture wounds, both requiring drains."

Frank is home recovering but still on edge after the incident on Monroe Street around 1 p.m.

According to Hoboken police, three dogs without leashes got out of a parked car and attacked eight other leashed dogs while they were walking with their pet sitters from Dogboken.

The Dogboken workers rushed to the scene when they heard what happened.

"I saw the dog and saw one of the punctures, I saw that and I declared that he definitely needed to go to the vet after that, so we called the owners right away," said Kelsey Cartagena with Dogboken.

The owner of the aggressive dogs, who lives in Hoboken, put the animals back in his vehicle and got away. According to police, this was not the owner's first offense.

They say the same three dogs attacked a man and woman at a Red Roof Inn on Meadowlands Parkway on Monday night after the owner left his hotel door open.

They were rushed to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Secaucus police officers were on their way to Hoboken to seize the dogs when the latest attack happened.

Hoboken officials say the owner violated an August 2025 order that stated the dogs needed to be muzzled and leashed in public.

"We're beyond disgusted, it is so irresponsible," Swiatkowski said. "I believe that they should be behind bars, not being responsible not only for your dogs, but for the training."

Frank now has a long road to recovery, both physically and emotionally.

"This is not our normal, Frank. Frank is very energetic, loving, playful, he's smart and seeing him in this state has been heartbreaking," Swiatkowski said.

Frank's owners are pushing for stricter leash laws and harsher penalties.

Hoboken Police are investigating the attack. So far no criminal charges have been filed but apparently the owner has been issued several summonses.
