NJ Transit will lower cost of train tickets to World Cup matches from $150 to $105

NEW YORK (WABC) -- New Jersey Transit will lower the price of roundtrip rail tickets to the World Cup this summer from $150 to $105.

The trip from Penn Station in New York City to MetLife Stadium usually costs around $12, but prices skyrocketed for the eight scheduled matches.

On Thursday, NJ Transit said it can give riders a break because of corporate sponsors.

The tickets go on sale next Wednesday, May 13, and must be booked in advance.

NJ Transit is continuing to solicit sponsors ahead of that date, and it is possible ticket prices could decrease further, depending on future private funding.

A spokesperson for Gov. Mikie Sherrill released the following statement:

"Governor Sherrill has been clear that FIFA should contribute to transport its fans to World Cup games. Since it hasn't, she directed NJ Transit to seek private and non-taxpayer dollars to significantly reduce the fare. The Governor appreciates all the companies that have already stepped up to lower the costs for ticket holders. She will continue to ensure the World Cup is an experience that benefits fans and all New Jerseyans."
