NJ Turnpike crash victims remembered in Lakewood: 'Larger than life'

Monday, October 20, 2025
NEW JERSEY -- Four families are left devastated after a fatal crash in New Jersey.

The victims have been identified as Aharon Lebovits, Shlomo Cohen, Chaim Grossman - all 18, and Yaakov Kilberg, age 19.

Three of the victims were from Lakewood.

New Jersey State Police say the four teens were in a vehicle driving southbound in Carneys Point Township near the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

According to police, 41-year-old Christopher Neff of Colorado was driving a Dodge pickup truck the wrong way on the Turnpike and hit the teens head on.

After the collision, a freight liner driving behind the teens struck them too.

All four teens died. Police say Neff has serious injuries.

The four were friends and classmates, having studied at a Jewish school together.

The family of one victim, Aharon Lebovits, released a statement saying in part: "Anyone who he crossed paths with quickly became a friend and part of his ever growing circle."

Rabbi Shlomo Landau says Aharon and another passenger - Shlomo Cohen - were friends with his son.

"We loved it when they would come to our house. My kids loved it," Landau said. "We believe there's an afterlife and we believe that these young men are in a really beautiful and sweet spot."

The CEO of Chai Lifeline - a crisis support organization - says they're offering counseling to the community.

"They are able to give emotional first aid to the people who are affected by this terrible trauma," said Rabbi Simcha Scholar, CEO of Chai Lifeline.

It's not clear how or why Neff was driving the wrong way on the Turnpike.

On Monday, state police put out a call for witnesses who may have seen the truck traveling the wrong way to contact them as they continue to investigate.

So far, no charges have been announced.
