EAST VILLAGE, Manhattan (WABC) -- Two men were shot and one was killed inside Tompkins Square Park in the East Village on Friday morning.

It happened on East 7th Street near Avenue A just after 9:50 a.m.

At least one of the shootings happened at the southwest corner of the park, near the chess area.

A 74-year-old man was shot in the torso and was taken to the hospital in critical condition where he was pronounced dead.

A 44-year-old man was also shot in the torso and is said to be stable. He ran to a deli across the street for help.

The suspect, described a, 5'6" tall man, wearing a black leather jacket, blue jeans and mask, got away.

Officials say both victims have extensive criminal records with more than 30 arrests between the two of them -- some for drug dealing.

The southwest corner of the park has been riddled with drug dealing and homelessness.

There were two shootings within five days at the same location back in March, which led to the arrest of a 38-year-old man. Those shootings were linked to ongoing drug activity that has plagued the park over the last few years.

Police are still canvasing the neighborhood for the suspect in Friday's deadly shooting.
