NYC Public Schools to reopen Tuesday after historic blizzard despite opposition

Monday, February 23, 2026
NEW YORK (WABC) -- Cleanup efforts are underway in New York City, and public schools will reopen for in-person learning Tuesday, in the aftermath of a blizzard that battered the region.

The storm brought downed trees in SoHo, Greenwich Village, Bushwick, Brooklyn and the Highbridge section of the Bronx amid whiteout conditions, and thousands of customers in Far Rockaway, Queens reported power outages.

On Staten Island, crews rushed to free stranded city buses.

While a travel ban in the has been lifted, Mayor Zohran Mamdani is still urging New Yorkers to stay off the roads and stay indoors as New York City's Department of Sanitation continues cleaning snow from the streets.

"If you choose to drive, please exercise caution, travel slowly, and be mindful of others on the road. We continue to advise New Yorkers to stay safe and stay indoors as much as possible," Mamdani said in a post to social media.

During a Monday afternoon press conference, Mamdani announced that public schools would reopen on Tuesday.

"I hope students enjoy their snow day today, and stay warm and safe throughout, but I do have some tough news to share. School will be in-person tomorrow. You can still pelt me with snowballs when you see me," Mamdani said.

School buses are preparing to operate on Tuesday, ensuring students are able to travel to and from school safely.

However, the teacher's union is pushing back, maintaining reopening schools so fast after the blizzard could pose a real challenge for some teachers saying, "no one should jeopardize their safety to report to work."

More than 150,000 New Yorkers have signed an online petition asking Mamdani to switch to remote learning on Tuesday. The list includes teachers, students and parents.

"It's very bad out here. It's slippery. It's a mess," said parent, James Lecce, Sr. "I think they deserve an extra day home. At least one more day."

Meanwhile, alternate side parking is suspended through the weekend because of the blizzard.

New York was under a blizzard warning for the first time in nearly a decade, and Mayor Mamdani said the storm dropped 16 to 19 inches of snow on most parts of the city, with with parts of Eastern Staten Island reporting over 24 inches of snow.

Despite the blizzard, the mayor said the Department of Sanitation was able to clear over 1,600 crosswalks, 419 fire hydrants and almost 900 bus stops overnight, and even more this morning. In addition to DSNY, the Department of Transportation has cleared over 1,300 sheltered bus stops so far.

The Sanitation Department has also declared an official "end of storm," meaning homeowners and property owners have until 8:30 p.m. Monday to clear a four-foot path or face a fine.
