NYPD implements new security measures on bridges

NEW YORK (WABC) -- The NYPD now is implementing new security measures on all four bridges along the East River.

With added police patrols on the Brooklyn Bridge watching the thousands who cross this landmark, there is now new protection put in place. Large steel panels are now there to keep people from making their way up the cables and onto the bridge towers.

"Over the next couple of weeks you will see those barriers become more difficult to compromise," said John Miller, the deputy commissioner for counter intelligence.

The new security precautions come after a Russian tourist became the latest to pull off a daring and extremely dangerous stunt, climbing the cables to one tower and taking pictures. Then, he made his way down to police waiting to arrest him.

24-year old Yaroslav Kolchin said nothing as he left court, where prosecutors offered him a plea to a misdemeanor trespass charge.

It's not been determined if that would include a short time in jail or community service.

He's out on $5,000 bail.

"We're going to work the district attorney's office in order to resolve this matter as expeditiously as possible," his defense attorney said.

The Brooklyn Bridge and the others that span the East River are now the focus of a stepped up effort between the NYPD and the DOT to enhance security measures to prevent thrill climbing.

"So we are looking at those so we don't secure the Brooklyn Bridge and push traffic to other bridges for the same kind of stunts," Miller said.

While police officials have added patrols to the areas where the cables come closest to the bridge walkway, they are also adapting longer term measures.

"That will facilitate moving forward with many more cameras and much more hardware sophistication," Police Commissioner William Bratton said.

It's all in an effort to prevent this sort of dangerous stunt from happening there or on other bridges.
