NEW YORK (WABC) -- The NYPD officer hit in the head with a hatchet during what investigators are calling a terrorist attack in Queens is expected to leave the rehabilitation center Friday.
Officer Kenneth Healey, 25, left Jamaica Hospital Last week and was taken to a rehabilitation center in Nassau County. Just out of the police academy, Healey was on foot patrol in Jamaica when he was attacked.
The attacker, Zale Thompson, was shot and killed after police said he charged at Healey and other officers with a hatchet. Officer Joseph Meeker, 24, was struck on the arm. Investigators found that Thompson had frequented websites propagating the views of the Islamic State and other terror groups.
He complained in his own writings about "Zionists and Crusaders" occupying the Islamic world, saying the solution was to "cut the head off the beast," police said.
Family members said he spent long stretches alone in a bedroom in his father's home and seemed depressed.
