The attack happened just after 4 a.m. on Saturday near St. Peters Avenue in Parkchester.
The 27-year-old officer reportedly had just ended his shift when two individuals forced him to the ground and struck him in the face. Officials say the suspects proceeded to hold a knife to the victim's throat and took his gun, wallet and cellphone before fleeing the scene.
First responders transported the victim to a local hospital in critical condition. The officer suffered multiple facial fractures as a result of the attack, police say.
On Sunday afternoon, the NYPD identified one of the suspects as 23-year-old Taveon Hargrove. The second suspect is still unidentified.
Anyone with information about the suspects or the incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
Police are still searching for the two suspects.
