The reported incident happened Monday just before 5 p.m. at a day care facility on Leavitt Street.
Police said the unidentified man told staff he was there to pick up the young girl and gave her name. The day care staff saw the man was not a listed emergency contact and did not release the child.
Members of the staff said the child remained safe the entire time and was secure inside the facility.
However, it turns out the man was there to pick up another child at the school.
That child's dad contacted the day care to clarify the man was the child's grandfather.
"Our school adheres to strict pick-up protocols, ensuring that children are only released to individuals on the approved pick-up list or those authorized by the parents," the day care had said in a statement. "The child remained safe and secure."
