Suffolk Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina told Eyewitness News that 62-year-old Rachel Frislid was found by a family member inside her home at 26 Pearl Court in Sayville.
Frislid was discovered at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said Frislid had been violently attacked. Authorities said the victim had at least one adult child and that none of her family members are believed to have been inside the home at the time of the attack.
Investigators do not believe the killing was a random attack and said they believe the incident was targeted. Police also said they are not aware of any previous domestic calls to the residence.
"The residents have nothing to fear regarding this attack, we do not think this was a random attack. We do believe this was a targeted attack. A family member found her and it was a short time after the assault occurred," Catalina said.
Pearl Court remained closed Friday as investigators continued to process the scene.
Police described the case as an active and ongoing investigation and did not say whether anyone was in custody.
