The energy utility company blames melting snow mixed with road salt for damaging underground electrical equipment: two major power lines were knocked out.
562 customers -- that's households, not individuals -- in Boreum Hill and Park Slope are hopeful this disruption will come to an end by ConEd's new restoration estimate of 1 p.m. today, as power has come back slowly.
"Families are unable to make arrangements because the estimated time of restoration keeps moving," City Council Member Shahana Hanif reacted to the situation; "we do need a plan from Con Edison, from our city, to ensure that residents are prepared before a snowstorm."
The frigid cold is delaying restoration with manholes under five feet of ice. Snowed-in cars sitting on top of manholes are also blocking those key access points.
ConEd has made significant progress since more than 2,000 customers were powered down Monday.
Crews were hard at work yesterday, making repairs to get the lights back on for the majority of customers living in Park Slope.
As for the city's Office of Emergency Management, they are working alongside a number or agencies to more quickly restore service.
"ConEd has to get to their infrastructure. It's underground, but the cars aren't moving. Alternate side is suspended. People aren't going anywhere. So we can get NYPD here to move the cars a couple blocks, but then they're snowed in. So we have to get sanitation out to salt. So it just multiplies," said Christina Farrell, First Deputy Commissioner of OEM.
A warming center has opened at the Wyckoff Gardens Community Center for anyone impacted by the outages.
