Victims speak out at former urgent care doctor's sentencing in Queens: 'You are a disgrace'

KEW GARDENS, Queens (WABC) -- A former urgent care doctor in Queens who pleaded guilty to sexually abusing five patients, including a minor, was sentenced in court on Wednesday.

Prosecutors say Amir Sitafalwalla groped several patients and made inappropriate comments toward them on multiple occasions - dating back to 2017.

Emotions ran high in the courtroom as the victims had the opportunity to address their abuser directly.

Two of the five victims gave impact statements, including one in person who called it an "enraging" betrayal to be sexually assaulted by someone you trust that you are seeing for medical care - and who instead ended up doing irreparable damage.

Sitafalwalla, who is now stripped of his medical license, looked on during the sentencing hearing as one victim described the horrific abuse he suffered:

"Every time I think of that day, I am sick... I would rather die than experience that ever again ... it has changed me as a person and a man, 100 percent."

The victim was 21 when the abuse occurred during an urgent care medical visit. He addressed Sitafalwalla directly in court, saying:

"You are a disgrace, a coward...you prey on young men behind your medial license...you are repulsive and weak."

Another victim sent in a statement that was read by lawyers.

"No one seeking medical attention should go through what we did," the statement said.

Judge Gia Morris sentenced Sitafalwalla to six years of probation and level two sex offender status.

Sitafalwalla had pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting five patients - one was only 17 years old. While there are five victims on record in the case, prosecutors believe there are more.

Hardeep Shergill, an attorney for two victims, says they are disappointed the district attorney did not push for a harsher punishment.

"Our clients would have preferred to see some jail time," Shergill said. "It has destroyed them. My clients are married. It has impacted their marital relationships. It impacted their personal relationships, a tremendous strain on their personal lives."

Two victims are now bringing civil suits against Sitafalwalla and ModernMD in Woodhaven - alleging he should have never been hired as he was already fired from another urgent care facility after complaints of abuse from patients there and was under investigation by the health department.

"So this is another avenue for accountability," Shergill said.

ModernMD released the following statement:

"We were deeply disturbed to learn of the conduct in this case and fully cooperated with the authorities through the process. Patient safety and well-being are integral to our mission, and we are committed to ensuring patients continue to receive the quality care they have come to expect from us."
