It happened at 243rd Street and Weller Avenue around 4:30 p.m.
The man was shot in the jaw and the girl was shot in the thigh.
Neighbor Evie Boyd said she heard the gunshots on her block.
"And she went in the driveway of my neighbor's home and took cover behind the car in the driveway," Boyd said. "She appeared to be in panic and I noticed right away it was a little girl."
The 75-year-old is known in the neighborhood as a nice guy who rides around and collects cans.
"I just saw the old man and he was in pain, he was bleeding from the floor," another witness said.
Neighbors rushed to help the victims as police flooded the scene.
The man went to Jamaica Hospital and the girl went to Long Island Jewish Medical Center. They are both expected to survive.
Police say two teenagers on a red scooter fired the shots, though it isn't clear why or at whom. They do believe that the older man was not a target.
"I've been living here for 34 years I've never experienced anything like this.... absolutely upset and this is unacceptable," Boyd said.
The teenage victim was with another boy, and witnesses say they jumped in a car and drove away before she later turned up at the hospital. Cops are trying to figure out if one or both of them might have been the targets.
