It happened at 46th Street and 47th Avenue near I.S. 125 in the Woodside section.
The 16-year-old was killed, and her 8-year-old sister was injured after being struck by a truck outside of a school on Wednesday.
A box truck was making a right turn when it struck the two who were crossing 46th Street.
The driver of the truck told police he did not see the girls and continued on his delivery route. The truck left the scene and was found nearby while the driver was making a delivery, police said.
Investigators are now working to determine who had the right of way and if external factors were involved.
The 16-year-old and her sister lived two blocks away, police said.
The 8-year-old was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian / Weill Cornell Medical Center with minor injuries and is in stable condition, police said.
Family members buckled from the grief of the numbing tragedy, had to be helped to their feet.
A GoFundMe was created in support of the family.
The hot Wednesday afternoon was last day of school for the summer.
Normally, there would have been a crossing guard at the intersection at the time of the incident, but since it was the last day of school, students were released early, and the crossing guard was already off duty.
