Rail defect north of Queens Plaza affecting afternoon subway service

FOREST HILLS (WABC) -- An MTA track geometry car discovered a rail defect north of Queens Plaza that is affecting E, F, M and R trains.

Repairs are being made now, but it is not clear how long service will be affected. It is unclear whether the rail is broken.

The biggest impact is on the M train. There is no service between Essex Street on the Lower East Side and Forest Hills-71st Avenue in Forest Hills, Queens. Northbound E and F trains are running local in sections.

A track geometry car is an automated track inspection train used to test several geometric parameters of the track without obstructing normal subway operations.

Some of the parameters generally measured include position, curvature, alignment of the track, smoothness, and the cross level of the two rails.

The cars use a variety of sensors, measuring systems, and data management systems to create a profile of the track being inspected.

The MTA says the following service changes are in effect:
Northbound trains are running local from Queens Plaza to Jackson Hts-Roosevelt Av.
Northbound trains are running local from 21 St-Queensbridge to Jackson Hts-Roosevelt Av.
There is no train service between Essex St and Forest Hills-71 Av in both directions.
Some Northbound trains terminate at 57 St-7 Av. and trains are running with delays in both directions.
