Sandy Kenyon reviews: "Deliver Us From Evil" and "Tammy"

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Two very different movies have one thing in common: both start out as one sort of film and morph into another, which is why i just can't recommend either one.

"Tammy" made me howl with laughter until it turned sappy, while "Deliver Us From Evil" ends with an exorcism but starts as a crime drama.

Hard to believe but "Deliver Us From Evil" is based on the true story of a real NYPD sergeant played in the movie by Eric Bana. Hard to believe because I thought stuff like this only happened in the movies.

The sergeant reluctantly agrees to let a priest help him when he investigates the case of 3 soldiers who were dishonorably discharged. The crime drama started to hook-me-in before the movie took a left turn into the land of blood and guts. By then I was ready for a good laugh.

Tammy

Melissa McCarthy wrote the comedy with her husband, Ben Falcone, who directed the movie and has a brief cameo in the first few minutes.

After Tammy gets fired from her job, she is free to go on a road trip with her grandmother who is looking for a quick fling and some fun.

Susan Sarandon is way too young to be credible as her grandmother, but you may be laughing too hard to notice especially when Tammy has to try and pull off a robbery to help granny make bail.

The film starts to fall flat soon afterwards as the star looks to prove she can do so much more than just be silly.

McCarthy is so talented she can do drama and comedy and everything in between, but her desire to do it all in one movie leads her astray. Then again, I'm not the target audience for this one so I decided to get a second opinion.

Dr. Ashley Winter from the ABC series "New York Med" found Tammy's journey to be more "hokey than endearing." the "all is well" ending is less than satisfying, but overall the good doctor would recommend it to a friend.
