LOS ANGELES -- It's a desperate search for the old ways of life after the apocalypse in Ridley Scott's "The Dog Stars."

A brand-new trailer offers a closer look at the wasteland that Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley and Josh Brolin will be surviving in - as well as the threats they must fight off as they search for a better life than simple survival.

The world is in ruin and appears nearly empty as Hig (Jacob Elordi) and Cima (Margaret Qualley) reminisce about their old lives before the catastrophic end of the world. Now desolate, Hig is seen using roads as landing strips as he pilots a yellow plane across the wasteland with his dog.

"The world that was doesn't exist," Bangley, played by Josh Brolin, says.

Hig, Cima and Bangley are part of a safe, protected community surviving the apocalypse by living off the land. But when they pick up a mysterious radio signal, they venture out to try and reclaim some of the old world they lost.

What they find, however, are hordes of human survivors driven to violent madness.

"There's a new bunch in town," Hig says. "They're going after everything that's left."

The three will have to trust in each other's skills and wits to try and see if there really is any humanity left in a world turned desperate and chaotic.

The film, based on the novel by Peter Heller, also stars Allison Janney, Benedict Wong and Guy Pearce.

"The Dog Stars" comes to theaters and IMAX August 28.

The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of 20th Century Studios and this ABC station.
