Fairfield halts public SantaCon event

FAIRFIELD, Connecticut (WABC) -- Fairfield's shore community boasts multimillion-dollar houses with private beach access, but some of the properties are rented to Fairfield University students.

In recent years, it's been the site of increasingly popular SantaCon celebrations that draw thousands of students from surrounding schools.

This week, police arrested a 19-year-old Fairfield student, Emmet Blaney from Massapequa, for allegedly promoting a SantaCon gathering at an address police say he has no connection to.

A social media post racked up 600-thousand views.

A key reason for the attempted disorderly conduct charge is that Fairfield police and the town have made a major change this year: there will be no public SantaCon. Instead, it will be a smaller, private event.

Students will be allowed to buy tickets for themselves and a maximum of two guests. Identification will be required showing proof of legal drinking age for anyone consuming alcohol.

The event will take place at Jennings Beach, which has a larger, public parking area, on December 6th.

Blaney will be scheduled to appear in court two days after that.
