Authorities were still canvassing the area Monday afternoon, searching for video and evidence in the police shooting.
Neighbors say the man was carrying a knife and lived in a house on Kendall Drive.
He was accused of menacing, and when police arrived late Saturday afternoon, they say the suspect was told to drop the weapon before lunging at the officer with the knife. The officer then fired several shots.
The suspect was rushed to the hospital.
Residents say the suspect is in his early 30s and may have a substance abuse issue.
The shooting caused a commotion in the normally quiet area of Sayreville. .
There are reports the suspect was causing a commotion and possibly threatening people with the knife and that's why police were called.
