Some school districts in New Jersey forced to shorten spring break due to extra snow days

Wednesday, February 25, 2026
UNION CITY, New Jersey (WABC) -- Several school districts in New Jersey were closed for the third straight day because of the blizzard.

School districts cite a lot of snow in the road, lack of access to parking, and some sidewalks blocked by snowbanks as their reason for closing.

Many districts are now forced with the decision of shaving vacation days off of spring break due to the extra snow days.

For example, the Tenafly School District says it's adding April 2, May 21 and May 26 back on its schedule for in-class instructions.

Metuchen says it built snow days into its calendar, so school will be in session June 22, 23, and 24.

Outside Washington School in Union City, the wide sidewalks are immaculate, but the district says there could have been plenty of other potential hurdles on the way to school on Wednesday, so it decided it was better off not having students trying to navigate their way to classes.

Densely populated Union City is just about 1.3 square miles. The school district has about 12,500 students.

Union City Schools Superintendent Silvia Abbato says the district went above and beyond to make sure schools were ready when students return, which will be Thursday.

Officials will meet to decide if the days need to be made up.

Kids welcomed the snow day.

"I think it's cool because you can make a snowman," a fourth grader said.
