Officials say the street was bulging around 7:30 a.m. at Secaucus Road and Henry Street, an industrial area surrounded by businesses.
The smell of gas was pungent in the area because it was being vented through open manholes.
Officials say a 16-inch main broke, causing the road to buckle. Crews were taking time to carefully make repairs.
At 10 a.m., crews said the repairs would take up to 16 hours.
Those who live in the area will likely not have gas until the main as been repaired.
Authorities are asking drivers to avoid the area. Police are enforcing emergency road closures at County Avenue to Secaucus Road. Secaucus Road from Henry Street to County Avenue has also been shuttered.
PSE&G said there were no evacuations and there were no reported injuries.
