Investigators are searching for the driver, who allegedly fled the scene after abandoning the vehicle involved in the collision.
According to police, the driver of a black 2018 BMW sped through a red light and struck two unoccupied vehicles before crashing into a Hyundai Sonata and a 51-year-old bicyclist on Bruckner Boulevard in the Longwood section of the Bronx.
The force of the impact pushed the Hyundai into another vehicle, creating a multi-vehicle wreck that left debris scattered across the roadway.
The bicyclist was rushed to a hospital but could not be saved. The driver of the Hyundai Sonata was also hospitalized and is listed in stable condition.
Family members identified the victim as 51-year-old Angelo Camara, a mechanic who was riding home from work when he was struck, according to relatives. Loved ones said Camara frequently used his bicycle to get around and leaves behind five children. He was also one of six siblings.
"That's how he got to work and to his house to go feed his family, that was his way of commuting," said Camara's brother-in-law, Angel Cassanova.
Cassanova and his family grieved Wednesday afternoon on the side of a busy road, where candles sit not far from where Camara was hit.
"Sometimes in these situations you can't find the right words, it's shocking," Cassanova said.
"Oh, I'm distraught man. I can't believe it," said the victim's friend Michael Bharath. "This was his livelihood. He used to work here. He used to get money. He was a mechanic. The whole neighborhood knows him, everybody knows him."
Cassanova's sister was Angelo Camara's everything for 25 years.
Cassanova remembered the good times.
"He was a bit of a jokester but so smooth and suave, when you have that moment with him of becoming a friend, you know you'll always have a friend for life," Cassanova said.
Police said the BMW driver abandoned the vehicle after the crash and got into another car before fleeing the area.
Investigators are working to identify and locate the suspect.
Witnesses told police the BMW appeared to be speeding before the initial collision. Authorities are asking anyone with information about the crash or the driver to contact the NYPD.
"All I can say is turn yourself in. If you keep running it's going to make matters even worse," Cassanova said.
