Study: Global rise in nearsightedness says light starvation is hurting eyes, not screens

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- New research suggests a global rise in nearsightedness, or myopia, may about more about light starvation, not screens.

The study from the SUNY College of Optometry said prolonged close-up focus indoors causes pupils to constrict, limiting light to the retina. Reduced simulation may drive nearsightedness.

Doctors say the problem can get worse very quickly and has serious consequences like increasing the risk of retinal detachment and retinal degeneration, Dr. Jose-Manuel Alonso said.

Doctors also say the condition now nearly affects nearly half of young adults in the U.S. and Europe.

To help, doctors say to read near a window, if it's not nice enough to be outside. Take breaks and keep your phone an arm's length away while reading.
