LOS ANGELES -- A new take on a familiar superhero is heading to the big screen, offering a different perspective on one of DC's iconic characters.

Despite the abundance of superhero films in Hollywood, there has only been one live-action feature film with Supergirl as the lead, until now. The latest project from DC Studios reintroduces the character with a more unconventional edge.

In the film, Supergirl is portrayed as a tougher, more unpredictable heroine who doesn't pull any punches.

Actress Milly Alcock takes on the role, bringing a personal connection to the character.

"It felt like I didn't need to reach," she said. "It felt like this is the closest character I've ever played to who I actually am as a person, which might be concerning to those who have seen the film, who will see the film."

Unlike her more famous cousin, the film's version of Supergirl is not focused on saving the world. Instead, she is driven by a more personal mission: rescuing her beloved dog, Krypto.

The story introduces newcomer Eve Ridley as Ruthye, marking her big-screen debut. Co-stars describe her warmly.

"Eve kind of has this beautiful ability to be an old soul, but so present, but so understanding and so incredibly human," Alcock said.

The film is based on the comic series "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" and is adapted for the screen by Ana Nogueira. She said the story resonated on a personal level.

"It just felt really honest," Nogueira said. "It felt like, of course this is what she would be like. And we've all kind of felt this way, I think, at some point in our lives, in our 20s, in that really pivotal moment. And I was really excited to explore on this epic scale just the story of a girl coming to terms with herself."

The film also introduces the character Lobo, described by Supergirl as "an immortal with a god complex."

Actor Jason Momoa takes on the role, trading his "Aquaman" persona for a more rugged character who may be the only one capable of matching Supergirl's intensity.

"Supergirl" flies into theaters on Friday, June 26.
