UPPER WEST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) -- A teenager was slashed multiple times during a dispute in the lobby of a high-end Upper West Side apartment building.

The victim, a 16-year-old boy, was hanging out with a girl near the stairs when he was surrounded and attacked by four young men in the lobby of the building on West 61st Street just after 10:45 p.m. Wednesday.

At some point during the scuffle, the victim was slashed in the back, left wrist and left shoulder. He was taken to Mount Sinai Morningside in stable condition.

The four young men fled on foot and no arrests were immediately made, but a knife was recovered at the scene.

The lobby of the building, dubbed Waterline Square, where one-bedroom rentals start at $7,500 monthly, became a crime scene, with detectives collecting evidence and dusting for prints.

"I think this is horrible. It's crazy to think this stuff is happening so close to home for me," said Rafael Castro, a resident. "Yeah, it's crazy to see this stuff on the sidewalk of my building. Generally living in this building is a great experience, that's why it's even more surprising that something like this would happen so close."

Neighbors told Eyewitness News that there have been ongoing issues with youths in the building.

While police are on the lookout for the suspects, residents are thinking of the victim.

"I hope he has a speedy recovery and best wishes to the family," said one resident.

Neighbors say the victim is a resident of the building, with no prior interaction with police.

Eyewitness News reached out to the property managers, Windsor Communities, and they would not comment.

Police are investigating.
