It all started to unfold just before 10:30 p.m. Thursday at an apartment building on Gun Hill Road.
The parents of the suspect, 18-year-old Antonio Morales, were seen in surveillance video in the hour leading up into the shooting.
It shows the father speaking with police officers and then leaving in a patrol car to go locate the 18-year-old after some type of incident inside the family home in the Van Nest section of the Bronx around 9:45 p.m.
About 35 minutes later at an apartment building at the intersection Gun Hill Road and Paulding Avenue, they knocked on a door of a first-floor apartment and say Morales answered the door, but pretended like it wasn't him.
His father recognized his voice so police were setting a perimeter. That's when they say Morales abruptly fired three shots out of a window and tried to storm out past officers in the hallway.
In the process, one NYPD officer was injured when he fell back and hit his head in the scuffle, fracturing his skull.
Two other officers then opened fire. The suspect was shot twice, in the lower back and his right arm.
"The officer who sustained a serious head injury was immediately rushed to Jacobi Medical Center, thankfully he is currently in stable condition," NYPD officials said at a press conference. "The perpetrator was also brought to Jacobi Medical Center and is in critical condition as well. This incident is being investigated by our force investigation unit."
Police say they recovered a loaded firearm from Morales' backpack.
Authorities say the entire incident was captured on bodycam video and it is all still under investigation.
They say the suspect has several prior arrests, including an arrest for attempted murder after Morales opened fire on a 15-year-old.
