NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- On this episode of "Tiempo," we'll spotlight several school programs in the town of Uniondale on Long Island that have a very large Latino population.

They have programs like Hermanos Unidos and The New York State Latina Mentoring Initiative.

We'll talk about the mission of these programs, which is to create and support one-on-one mentoring relationships with students and to prepare them for college.

And the Girl Scouts of Greater New York is the city's largest girls-only leadership program, and it serves thousands of girls across every ZIP code in the city.

They represent stability, community and a sense of normalcy during a stressful period of their lives.

We'll introduce you to Girl Scout Troop 6000, a first-of-its-kind program. It serves girls living in the city's shelter system, many of whom come from Spanish-speaking families.

The troop started officially in 2017 and serves girls in New York City who are living in temporary shelters or experiencing other housing challenges.

Today, the troop has served in 20 different shelters across all five boroughs, reaching thousands of girls in the process.

Kiara Lorenzana and Willa from the Girl Scouts of Greater New York will be joining us.

Tiempo with Joe Torres airs Sunday at 11:30 a.m. on Channel 7, WABC-TV in New York City.
