BROOKLYN (WABC) -- A 30-year-old box truck driver has been charged in the death of an off-duty NYPD officer who was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Brooklyn on Wednesday.

Police said a motorcyclist collided with a box truck that did not stay at the scene on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway at Atlantic Avenue, police said.

Police said Carlos Almanzar Toribio was later arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, operating an unregistered vehicle with no license plate.

The 30-year-old officer, who joined the department in February 2021, was headed home from the 84th Precinct in Downtown Brooklyn at the time of the crash.

He was taken to NYU Langone in Brooklyn and was pronounced dead.

He was wearing a helmet.
