The victim, Danish Sarwar, is hooked up to feeding tubes after police say he was shot in his neck.
The Pakistani immigrant, who moved to Brooklyn three years ago, worked seven days a week as an Uber driver to support his family back home before police say he was nearly killed during an attempted carjacking.
"He's a child. He's 21 years old," said Danish's brother Hamza Sarwar. "God, he gave him a second life."
An image shows the man police say shot the 21-year-old after he robbed and tried to carjack him.
In video taken from the Uber's dashcam, you can see the suspect remove his face mask.
Hamza says the suspect stole his brother's phone, $500 cash, and then as he was handing over the keys to his SUV, the suspect shot Danish in the neck, then fled.
The window of his SUV was left shattered by the bullet.
"If he shoots you in your neck or your head, there's only one thing. He wants to kill you," Hamza said.
Police say it happened on Parkside Avenue near Bedford Avenue in Prospect Lefferts Gardens around 4:15 a.m. on July 11.
The suspect was a passenger Sarwar was picking up.
Police say the suspect was last seen wearing blue shorts, a black sweatshirt, a black mask, black shoes and was carrying a book bag.
Sarwar was unconscious in critical condition for 10 days. He still can't move or feel his left arm.
His brother says he opened his eyes for the first time a few days ago and was able to speak Tuesday after doctors installed a microphone in his throat.
"He's scared. Who's not scared when somebody shoots you in the neck? You're not scared?" Hamza said.
Hamza says his brother has a long road to recovery.
Hamza also drives an Uber, but he doesn't want to anymore and doesn't want his brother doing it either.
