United Airlines flight makes emergency landing at Newark Airport amid mechanical issues

NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- A United Airlines flight en route to Puerto Rico made an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International Airport on Saturday morning.

The Federal Aviation Administration said crew members reported a mechanical issue as the plane flew over the Atlantic Ocean shortly after takeoff from Newark.

The plane landed safely around 11:40 a.m.

The FAA is investigating what happened.

The passengers were placed on another plane later in the day, the airline said.
