Nearly 100 dogs, cats and exotic animals removed from Orange County home

WARWICK, Orange County (WABC) -- Nearly 100 animals -- both domestic and exotic -- were seized from a home in Warwick, Orange County last week.

The animals are recovering at the Animal Nation Farm Sanctuary in Westchester after being discovered in deplorable conditions.

Investigators said they found filthy cages housing dozens of animals.

Sixty-six were seized in August and 18 more were found when a search warrant was executed last week at the home on Old Dutch Hollow Road.

"You couldn't walk through that residence without stepping in something you didn't want to step in, so realistically speaking, it was just horrendous," said Matt King with the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

From a rabbit with a wildly overgrown coat to a wallaby in the bathroom, the house was filled with exotic animals including peacocks, bearded dragons and even a tarantula.

The property in question sits on three acres and is a residential home listed by the owner as a farm. At one time, Linda Hickey, 62, was a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

"She let her license lapse and has not been licensed to take in wildlife however we found wildlife inside her house," said Suzyn Barron with the Warwick Valley Humane Society.

The animals are now being cared for in South Salem and ideally some will be adopted. Others like the wallaby will need a specialized facility or zoo.

There are still ponies and pigs and dozens more animals that were taken from the same location last year during a separate investigation at Hickey's home.

"It's very easy to turn around and be mad at the person that did it, but that is a person, obviously a sick person, it's sad that her and her family were living in these conditions and we have to look at that too," said Patrick Moore with Animal Nation.

Hickey is charged with animal neglect and animal cruelty in connection with the 2024 investigation. Charges related to this month's case are still pending.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact the Warwick Valley Humane Society.
