NEW YORK (WABC) -- As kids across the Tri-State head back to school, Eyewitness News has what parents need to know at the start of the school year during our special, "Back to School: Phones, AI & Your Kids."

We are diving deeper into cellphone policies, including the pros and the cons of bans, and the use of AI in the classroom.

Every school in the five boroughs and across New York State will have a so-called "bell-to-bell" ban on smart phones for the new school year. So what does that mean and what are the benefits and the drawbacks?

Eyewitness News spoke to Gov. Kathy Hochul about the cellphone ban.

In Yonkers, Eyewitness News reporter Marcus Solis takes a look at how the school district is collecting phones, and what the initial reaction was from kids.

Meanwhile, 7 On Your Side's Nina Pineda has more on the alternative options concerned parents have to keep track of their children amid the new cellphone policy.

But the questions about technology don't stop at cellphones, we will also take a closer look at AI. We head to school in New Jersey to see how teachers are using artificial intelligence in the classroom.
