Westhampton Beach: A coastal village on Long Island with big appeal

Updated 2 hours ago
WESTHAMPTON BEACH, New York (WABC) -- You could call it the calling card of Westhampton Beach: the 150-year-old Dix Windmill that stands at the entrance to Main Street, the heart of this charming coastal community.

For Mayor Ralph Urban, that sense of pride runs deep.

"Our population is about 1,900 to 2,000," he says. "In the summer, it jumps to 26,000 to 28,000-oh my goodness."

Recent upgrades, including new sewers and sidewalks, have only enhanced the village's appeal.

"I am so proud of what I do," Urban adds, "and where I do it."

That pride is shared by longtime business owner Liz Lambrecht, who has operated a men's clothing store here for 36 years and now serves as president of the Greater Westhampton Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to Main Street's boutique shops and restaurants, Lambrecht points to the marina within walking distance and the world-class beaches just beyond the village.

"It's absolutely a great destination because we are the first Hampton as you're coming out from the city," she says. "And we're very close to a lot of other Hampton towns."

Westhampton Beach offers visitors a unique combination: small-town charm paired with a cosmopolitan vibe.

Nowhere is that more evident than at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center.

"We always say we're a tiny jewel box of a theater," says Julienne Penza-Boone, "but we always present big talent."

Housed in a former 1930s movie theater, the venue now hosts major names in entertainment, drawing audiences from across the East End while also serving as a community hub.

"We've become a cultural beacon for this area," Penza-Boone says.

And that combination of beach, culture, dining, and shopping is exactly what makes the village stand out.

"As I said, you have the beach, a world-class theater, incredible restaurants, and great boutique shopping," Lambrecht notes. "It's just a very special place."
