"All I heard was a loud screeching, and then I heard a bang," area resident Kasey Mathews said. "And then I heard people screaming outside to call 911 and everything."

The victim was taken to University Hospital in Newark, where she is expected to survive.

"She didn't say nothing," Derick, a witness, said. "She was broke up. She was hurt...When she hit the ground and I didn't see her move, and I ran over there to see if she was she breathing. When I saw her breathing, I told everyone call police."

A witness told police a black four-door sedan drove away from the scene.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office and Newark police are investigating, and authorities are also trying to determine if the early Halloween accident is related to a shooting that took place just around the corner.
