Firefighters responding to the blaze on Jefferson Avenue found flames extending from the first floor and running along the rear of the building, with reports of people trapped inside.
The 50-year-old woman was found in a rear driveway after jumping from the building and was taken to University Hospital with burns and possible traumatic injuries. Officials later said she suffered a broken bone and was transferred to St. Barnabas Hospital for further treatment.
The fire broke out around 7:30 a.m. at a large multi-family residence at 470 Jefferson Ave. The intensity of the blaze also caused exterior damage to a neighboring multi-family home.
The American Red Cross said its Disaster Action Team is assisting 15 people from eight displaced families with emergency financial aid for temporary lodging, food, clothing and other immediate needs.
More than a dozen fire units and chiefs responded as the blaze escalated to a third alarm and brought it under control. The cause of the fire was not immediately released.
